Job Announcement:  Director of Development & Communications

Groundworks Collaborative—a dynamic organization committed to providing shelter, food, and supportive services with dignity—is actively hiring a seasoned leader to oversee fundraising and communications.  We are seeking a leader with excellent written and oral communication skills, a track record in raising major gifts, and who enjoys building strong and lasting relationships.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director (who was in the Director of Development & Communications role for over a decade), this position will have the creative opportunity to enhance fundraising, communications, and related systems to achieve ambitious Annual Fund goals.  As a senior staff member, the Director of Development & Communications will additionally provide agency-wide leadership to ensure the overall success of Groundworks’ programs, workplace, and community impact—contributing to Groundworks’ culture as a great place to work.

Position Overview

The Director of Development & Communications provides key leadership and management of all Groundworks fund development activities to ensure the organization has sufficient funding to meet its mission.  This position manages all external and internal communications to keep stakeholders informed and promote goodwill throughout the community.  This position works closely with the Board of Directors, donors, and community partners. 

  • Direct supervision of the Development Coordinator and coordination of the scope of work with one freelance grant writer
  • Facilitates fundraising and communications planning, evaluation, and continuous improvement as needs emerge
  • Forecasts and plans for raising Annual Fund income to meet Groundworks’ annual operating budget
  • Cultivates strong relationships with donors, private foundations, and prospective donors through regular stewardship and engagement
  • Regularly reports on progress to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and related committees
  • Provides support and direction to the Board regarding fundraising, stewardship, and communications; co-facilitates the Development & Communications Committee with Chair
  • Writes daily for multiple audiences, including website, newsletters, media publications, internal communications, private grants, social media posts, and donor communications
  • Conducts tours of Groundworks’ facilities and programs
  • Solicits major gifts to support the Annual Fund and any active fundraising campaigns
  • Regularly serves as a spokesperson for Groundworks as delegated by the Executive Director
  • Plans, coordinates, and executes marketing strategies to enhance fundraising
  • Builds and maintains an internal culture of philanthropy led by the Executive Director, with the Board and program leaders, centering and celebrating charitable support of the mission
  • Serves on the Leadership Team; provide agency-wide strategic leadership, problem-solving, planning, and coordination
  • Fosters a welcoming culture and excellent customer service 
  • Contributes to an exceptional workplace that promotes collaboration and leadership to support Groundworks’ agency-wide success and organizational learning

Key Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, non-profit management, or human-services-related field 
  • Five or more years of fundraising and/or marketing and communications experience
  • Exceptional persuasive writing and copy-editing skills
  • Well-developed time management and organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Experience working in the field of homeless services and/or housing preferred 
  • Significant experience in supervising staff and creating a great place to work
  • Experience in managing/enhancing systems, planning, grants management
  • Strong knowledge of community resources preferred
  • Passion for Groundworks’ mission, philosophy, and nonjudgmental, compassionate approach
